Cautious Curiosity

Most of the white blanket has been pulled back.
Now there are only patches of snow.
The pond looks like a bowl of slush.
Soon winter will only be a cold memory.

I’m ready for spring, warmth, and new growth.
It will be fun watching the forest wake up.

Yesterday, a black cat leapt to a lower branch
and surprised three deer that had been nibbling
on newly exposed vegetation.
Their startle reflexes were fun to witness.
But, their cautious curiosity was amazing to study.
They finally decided that their meal was more interesting.
